Olivia Wilde is spinning up a new Marvel film for Sony. The filmmaker behind Booksmart will direct a female-centered film as part of Sony’s growing Universe of Marvel Characters, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Wilde, who spent most of her career thus far on the acting side, broke out as a filmmaker with 2019’s Booksmart, which earned strong reviews and made her a sought after director. She is penning the Marvel script with Booksmart scribe Katie Silberman. Amy Pascal is producing with Rachel O’Connor executive produce.
Sony has a number of Spider-Man adjacent films in various stages of development, including Tom Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Jared Leto’s Morbius, with are both due out in 2021. S.J. Clarkson is developing her own female-centered movie, while Marc Guggenheim, known for his work on TV’s Arrowverse, is writing a film as well. Sony is also teaming with Disney’s Marvel Studios for a third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland dated for December 2021. [More at Source]
